7: The Ordeal

The Ordeal is the central crisis of the journey. The hero faces a life-changing challenge — literal or symbolic — that threatens who they are or what they value most. Something essential must die: an illusion, a relationship, a role, or an old self.

Passing through this ordeal marks a deep inner transformation. The hero cannot go back to who they were before this moment.
